Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsAI assistants answer local questions directly, and what they say depends on what they can verify. Linn County has 7 places of 2,500 or more residents, each asking its own local questions. That is the context for answer engine optimization (AEO) in Linn County with GetPhound: audited business data, schema markup, conversational local content and monthly monitoring, included in Organic Growth.
Snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
76.9/ 100
Placed 86 among the 1,822 counties that have 20,000 or more people, and 61 within our own 400-market set. A higher score means more established businesses are sharing the same pool of AI answers. See how it is calculated
The AI Answer Competition Index covers eleven kinds of business that people ask an assistant to recommend: law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical and auto repair. For each county of 20,000 or more residents it counts established locations, those with five or more employees, per 10,000 people. Linn County scores 76.9, which is more crowded than most.
Beyond the score, Linn County is a county made up of many sizeable towns and a county where larger firms, those with 20 or more employees, hold an outsized share of advice-led locations. The measures below show where it stands against every other county.
Each percentile places Linn County among the 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents, as the share of them with a lower value. Built from: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Reading the market
Linn County is not one market but 7, one for each place of 2,500 or more people (2 are larger than 10,000), a count that beats 88% of counties. Hyper-local content that answers the questions asked in each town is the core of GEO in a county shaped like this.
Two more details round out the picture. 10.3% of the advice-led locations in Linn County have 20 or more employees, more than in 98% of counties. 42.1% of the advice-led locations in Linn County have five or more employees, a higher share than in 80% of counties.
For anyone weighing GEO in Linn County, the unit of work is the town, not the county, so content and pages follow your service area.
Home to 228,972 people, Linn County is the 310th largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved -0.6% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 5,809 locations here across all industries, roughly 25.4 for every 1,000 residents.
Who else could be named
Read each row across: Linn County's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Bars give each category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county among those ranked; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. Method
Law offices lead the field for crowding in Linn County: 34 established locations, 2.0x a typical county, with the category as a whole down 14.4% since 2017. Auto repair shops (30 established locations, 1.5x) and residential remodelers (19 established locations, 1.5x) follow, also denser than a typical county.
Real estate agents and brokers added the most new competition, 50.8% more locations of all sizes than in 2017 (98 now). Law offices contracted by 14.4% since 2017, to 77 locations. Larger firms cluster in physicians offices: 29 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how often people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.
Where demand is heading
Each bar counts housing units approved for construction. Data: Building Permits Survey, county annual files, and a like-for-like year-to-date comparison. Approved units may not be built yet.
Year after year, approvals in Linn County land close together (845 in 2021, 945 in 2025), which works out to 41.3 per 10,000 residents and sits above 66% of counties. Through the first eight months of 2026, 629 units were approved against 685 in the same months of 2025 (-8.2%).
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in Linn County are residential remodelers (1.5x typical) and electrical contractors (1.4x typical). New households arrive without providers they trust, and a business whose details already match across the places AI engines read is easier for them to find described.

Population by place
These are the biggest places in Linn County. Someone asking an assistant about a provider nearby will usually name one of them, which is why plans for answer engine optimization (AEO) in Linn County start with the towns on this list.
| Place | Slice of the county's population | Residents in 2023 (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Cedar Rapids | 59% | 135,958 |
| Marion | 18% | 42,213 |
| Hiawatha | 3% | 7,219 |
| Mount Vernon | 2% | 4,552 |
| Robins | 1% | 3,312 |
| Fairfax | 1% | 2,904 |
Population figures come from Census Bureau estimates. Places here are cities, towns and census-designated places, and a city shared with a neighboring county appears with just the Linn County portion.
How it works
We review your business name, phone number and address and your site information across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other sources AI engines read, so everything matches.
We implement schema markup on your most important pages: LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema and Review schema, so AI engines can read your details as structured facts.
We publish local content in a conversational tone that speaks to what your customers actually ask about your services in your service area.
Each month we run tests of your visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then adapt the work to what we find. Reporting includes knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
What you get
Markup engines can read
Key pages get LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ schema markup, so AI engines can read who you are, where you work in Linn County and what you offer.
NAP across every listing
Your address, name and phone number are made to match across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look.
Hyper-local and conversational
We publish conversational, hyper-local content that answers the questions people put to assistants about your services, focused on Linn County first and foremost.
Volume and sentiment
Review volume and sentiment both get read by AI engines, so reputation work is part of the plan.
The groundwork
The groundwork is technical SEO: pages that load, can be crawled and carry the structure the rest of GEO adds to.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews
Each month we test your visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and reporting covers citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
GEO is delivered alongside SEO, Google Maps work and the website that comes with Gold and Platinum. Paid campaigns on Bing, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google are available separately for faster leads.
Check the math
GEO is part of the monthly Organic Growth plans, so the useful question is how many new customers a plan has to bring in to cover its cost. Customers from AI answers, search and Google Maps all count, and nobody can promise any of them.
Fees
GEO comes inside the Organic Growth plans, not as a separate purchase. You can start with no setup fee and leave whenever you like. Walk through the plans with our CEO.
Questions
GEO is included in Organic Growth rather than priced on its own. It is part of Silver ($1,495 a month), Gold ($2,495) and Platinum ($3,495). A website, custom built and fully managed, comes with Gold and Platinum. No setup fee and no contract on any of them.
We do not promise AI mentions, because nobody controls them. The goal is accurate, consistent facts that match across every source an engine reads. As engines gather, validate and favor consistent information, results improve over time, though we cannot say how long that takes. You see monthly test results from Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
They are different things. GEO is unpaid work: helping engines find accurate information about your business. ChatGPT ads are a separate paid test: sponsored, labeled ads shown to some users on the Free and lower-priced plans, bought through a self-serve Ads Manager and targeted by country and context, not by keyword. Measurement is still maturing, and ads do not change the answers.
Reviews are one of the signals. Because engines scan review volume and sentiment, reputation work is part of GEO, plus LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema. No mention can be guaranteed, though a healthy, current set of reviews gives engines more to work with.
No contract and no setup fee: plans are flat-rate and month to month. Only one business per category per city is accepted, which keeps us from working for your direct competitor in Linn County.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Each report includes local rankings, AI visibility, citations, knowledge panels and platform traffic.
It is especially useful for several locations. AI tools need consistent, verified data to recommend a business locally, which makes matching names, addresses, phone figures and hours on Yelp, Google and Apple Maps important at each location. Larger firms, with 20 or more employees, hold 10.3% of the advice-led locations in Linn County.
Think of SEO as winning a place in a list of links and GEO as making your details usable to engines that answer directly. That covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and some people call it AEO. The two share groundwork, so Organic Growth includes both.
More than most. Linn County scores 76.9 on our AI Answer Competition Index, ranking 86th among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 61st within our 400-market set. Law offices lead the field for crowding, at 2.0 times the typical county. Remember that the index measures businesses, not AI behavior.
