AI Answer Competition Index
69.8/ 100
Ranked 230 among the 1,822 counties that have 20,000 or more people, and 147 within our own 400-market set. The higher the score, the more established businesses there are for each answer to choose between. How we work it out
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Each county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. New Haven County scores 69.8, which is more crowded than most.
New Haven County has two traits worth noting: it is a county made up of many sizeable towns, and it is a county where larger firms, those with 20 or more employees, hold an outsized share of advice-led locations. Below, every measure is set against the full list of counties.
Each percentile places New Haven County among the 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents, as the share of them with a lower value. Built from: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2021 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates. Connecticut changed from counties to planning regions in 2023; this page uses the counties that County Business Patterns still reports. Population and income are 2021 estimates and business counts are 2021.
What shapes AI visibility here
New Haven County is not one market but 27, one for each place of 2,500 or more people (22 are larger than 10,000), a count that beats 99% of counties. Hyper-local content that answers the questions asked in each town is the core of GEO in a county shaped like this.
Two other features of the New Haven County market matter here. 6.5% of the advice-led locations in New Haven County have 20 or more employees, more than in 87% of counties. New Haven County has 14.3 established advice-led businesses per 10,000 residents, more than 77% of counties.
For anyone weighing GEO in New Haven County, think town by town: each place deserves its own local content and consistent details.
Size matters for context: 863,700 residents (2021 estimate) put New Haven County 71st among 3,143 U.S. counties, and the population has changed -0.1% since the 2020 Census. All industries together have 19,249 employer locations, or 22.3 per 1,000 people.
The field an answer chooses from
Read each row across: New Haven County's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2021), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. See the method
Law offices lead the field for crowding in New Haven County: 152 established locations, 2.4x a typical county, with the category as a whole down 11.1% since 2017. Physicians offices (330 established locations, 1.8x) and roofing contractors (19 established locations, 1.4x) follow, also denser than a typical county. Auto repair shops are the least crowded category here at 0.9x typical (68 established locations), which leaves more room for a well-documented business to be noticed.
Residential remodelers added the most new competition, 31.5% more locations of all sizes than in 2017 (292 now). Dentists shrank instead, losing 13.5% of their locations to land at 340. For firm size, look at physicians offices: 88 locations employ 20 people or more.
Remember what a count can and cannot say. It tells you how many established businesses are in each category. It says nothing about AI mentions, search volume or timing, and nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer.

Where the customers are
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. Local questions usually name a town, so each of these is a separate context, and work on answer engine optimization (AEO) in New Haven County can be written for any of them.
| City or town | Slice of the county's population | People (2021 estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| New Haven | 16% | 135,081 |
| Waterbury | 13% | 113,811 |

| Meriden | 7% | 60,517 |
| West Haven | 6% | 55,294 |
| Milford | 6% | 52,390 |
Figures are Census Bureau population estimates. Cities, towns and census-designated places all count as places, and a city that straddles a county line is shown for its New Haven County part only.

GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. If you need customers while this builds, our paid ads team manages Bing, Google and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) campaigns.
Run your own numbers
Whether GEO pays off for you depends on your own figures, not a market average. Enter what a customer is worth and the plan you are weighing to see how many new customers a month cover it.
Monthly plans
The three Organic Growth plans below each include GEO, and it cannot be bought alone. You can start with no setup fee and leave whenever you like. Talk to our CEO about the options.
Questions
GEO is included in Organic Growth rather than priced on its own. Silver is $1,495 a month, Gold is $2,495 and Platinum is $3,495. Gold and Platinum also bring a custom-built website we host and maintain. None of the plans has a setup fee or a contract.
They are part of the picture. Review volume and sentiment are both scanned by AI engines, so reviews and reputation management are included in our GEO work, alongside schema markup (including Review schema) and consistent business details.
Whichever you serve. New Haven County has 27 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by New Haven, Waterbury, Hamden, Meriden and West Haven. The GEO content is hyper-local, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages (the monthly volume depends on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum) create a page for each service in each place you cover.
You can cancel anytime; there is no contract or setup fee. Pricing is flat and month to month, and we take only one business per category per city.
On our measure, New Haven County is more crowded than most counties: it scores 69.8, which is 230th out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 147th of our 400 markets. The busiest category is law offices, at 2.4x a typical county. The score describes the number of established competitors; what engines do with them is beyond what public data can show.
Think of SEO as winning a place in a list of links and GEO as making your details usable to engines that answer directly. That covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and some people call it AEO. Because they share groundwork, we deliver both in Organic Growth.
Nobody can, including us. Our part is the groundwork that gives an engine more to go on: matching details on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other listings, schema markup and local content. Engines gather and validate information over time, so there is no honest deadline. Each month we test visibility across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT and report what we see.
You do not have to. The first steps are an audit, schema on your important pages and fresh local content. A rebuild is optional: Gold and Platinum come with a custom-built, fully managed website if you want one.
They are two separate things. Advertisers can buy labeled, sponsored ads in ChatGPT through a self-serve Ads Manager, and some Free and lower-priced plan users see them. Measurement is still maturing, and the ads do not influence the answers. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
