Market snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
54.9/ 100
Placed 653 among the 1,822 counties with 20,000 or more residents, and 332 within our own 400-market set. Higher scores mean more established competitors per resident. See how it is calculated
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Every county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Washington, DC scores 54.9, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Look past the headline number and two features of Washington, DC emerge: it is an affluent city, and it is a city where larger firms, those with 20 or more employees, hold an outsized share of advice-led locations. Each measure below places it among all counties.
Percentiles compare Washington, DC with all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents: a percentile is the share of those counties with a lower value. Inputs: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes AI visibility here
Higher incomes ($104,643 median household income, above 95% of counties) change how people choose in Washington, DC: they weigh reviews, credentials and detail, not just price. AI engines scan review volume and sentiment too, which is why reviews and structured data sit at the center of our GEO work.
Two other features of the Washington, DC market matter here. 13.1% of the advice-led locations in Washington, DC have 20 or more employees, more than in 99% of counties. Washington, DC has 16.4 established advice-led businesses per 10,000 residents, more than 89% of counties.
For anyone weighing GEO services for Washington, DC businesses, affluent buyers do their research, so complete profiles and substantial local content earn their keep.
Home to 678,972 people, Washington, DC is the 103rd largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved -1.5% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 23,874 locations here across all industries, roughly 35.2 for every 1,000 residents.
Washington, DC is dense, and questions are often about a neighborhood or about what is nearby as much as about the city. GEO here comes down to precise service-area data, consistent listings and content for the specific services you offer.
Who else could be named
Read each row across: Washington, DC's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. Method
Law offices lead the field for crowding in Washington, DC: 556 established locations, 11.3x a typical county, with the category as a whole down 1.9% since 2017. Real estate agents and brokers (67 established locations, 4.7x) and accounting and CPA firms (46 established locations, 1.3x) follow, also denser than a typical county. Insurance agencies are the least crowded category here at 0.6x typical (42 established locations), which leaves more room for a well-documented business to be noticed.
The fastest growth is in residential remodelers: locations of every size rose 37.6% since 2017, to 139, so new names keep appearing. Physicians offices shrank instead, losing 12.7% of their locations to land at 331. The biggest employers sit in law offices, where 246 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how often people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.
New construction
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Source: Census Bureau Building Permits Survey, annual county files, with a same-months comparison for this year. Permits mark intent to build, not finished construction.
From a high of 7,705 units in 2022, approvals in Washington, DC dropped to 1,591 in 2025, about 79% less, and the 2025 rate of 23.4 per 10,000 residents is below 57% of counties. Year to date (January through August), approvals stand at 1,466, compared with 1,081 a year ago, a change of +35.6%.
Among businesses tied to building, real estate agents and brokers (4.7x typical) and residential remodelers (0.8x typical) are the most crowded in Washington, DC. Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.

Common questions
In short, GEO comes with Organic Growth and is not sold separately. It is part of Silver ($1,495 a month), Gold ($2,495) and Platinum ($3,495). Gold and Platinum also bring a custom-built website we host and maintain. None of the plans has a setup fee or a contract.
These names mostly mean the same thing: GEO, AEO (answer engine optimization) and AI search optimization all describe preparing your business for engines that answer directly, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. They draw on structured data, listings and trusted content, so the work complements SEO instead of replacing it.
We cannot promise that, and neither can anyone else. No one controls what an AI engine says. GEO makes the information those engines can find about your business accurate, consistent and well structured, and results improve over time as engines gather, validate and favor consistent information. We give no timeframe, but we test your visibility in Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT each month and show you what is changing.
There is nothing to sign and no setup fee. Each plan is billed month to month at a flat rate, with one business per category per city.
They are part of the picture. Review volume and sentiment are both scanned by AI engines, so reviews and reputation management are included in our GEO work, alongside schema markup (including Review schema) and consistent business details.
It means your name, phone number and address, and other details such as hours and services, read the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and everywhere else an AI engine might look. The first step in our process is an audit of exactly that, as mismatched details make it harder for an engine to describe you correctly.
GEO adds to SEO instead of taking its place, and Organic Growth includes both. Technical SEO is one of the pieces of GEO, and the same accurate data, solid pages and reviews that help you in search give AI engines more to draw on. Our Organic Growth plans cover both.
By our count, Washington, DC sits near the middle of the pack: it scores 54.9, which is 653rd out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 332nd of our 400 markets. The busiest category is law offices, at 11.3x a typical county. The score describes the number of established competitors; what engines do with them is beyond what public data can show.
Not at all. Advertisers can buy labeled, sponsored ads in ChatGPT through a self-serve Ads Manager, and some Free and lower-priced plan users see them. The ads do not affect the answers, and measuring them is still maturing. GEO is the unpaid work of keeping your information accurate and easy to use.
