Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsMonterey County is a high-income market, and that shapes how GEO should be done here. GetPhound's generative engine optimization prepares a business for AI search: consistent details across the listings engines read, structured data on key pages and local content that answers real questions, all inside our Organic Growth plans. The data below shows the Monterey County market.
Market snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
60.2/ 100
Placed 487 among the 1,822 counties with 20,000 or more residents, and 285 within our own 400-market set. Higher scores mean more established competitors per resident. How the score is built
The AI Answer Competition Index covers eleven kinds of business that people ask an assistant to recommend: law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical and auto repair. For each county of 20,000 or more residents it counts established locations, those with five or more employees, per 10,000 people. Monterey County scores 60.2, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Beyond the score, Monterey County is an affluent county and a county made up of many sizeable towns. The measures below show where it stands against every other county.
Each percentile places Monterey County among the 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents, as the share of them with a lower value. Built from: Census population estimates, County Business Patterns for 2017 and 2022, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
Local profile
Higher incomes ($86,809 median household income, above 86% of counties) change how people choose in Monterey County: they weigh reviews, credentials and detail, not just price. AI engines scan review volume and sentiment too, which is why reviews and structured data sit at the center of our GEO work.
Two more details round out the picture. Monterey County has 10 communities above 2,500 residents, 8 of them above 10,000, more than 93% of counties.
For anyone weighing GEO services for Monterey County businesses, affluent buyers do their research, so complete profiles and substantial local content earn their keep.
Home to 430,723 people, Monterey County is the 168th largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved -1.9% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 9,087 locations here across all industries, roughly 21.1 for every 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Monterey County: the largest, Salinas, has about 37% of residents, and others include Seaside (31,317), Monterey (29,116), Soledad (23,947) and Marina (22,833). An assistant asked about a service in one of them draws on local detail for that town, not for the whole county.
24% of the county, about 101,387 people, lives outside any named place, where "near me" and county-wide questions count for as much as a city name.
Where people live
These are the biggest places in Monterey County. Someone asking an assistant about a provider nearby will usually name one of them, which is why plans for answer engine optimization (AEO) in Monterey County start with the towns on this list.
| Place name | Portion of the county | Residents in 2023 (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Salinas | 37% | 159,506 |
| Seaside | 7% | 31,317 |
| Monterey | 7% | 29,116 |
| Soledad | 6% | 23,947 |
| Marina | 5% | 22,833 |
| Greenfield | 5% | 20,634 |
Population figures come from Census Bureau estimates. A place can be a city, a town or a census-designated place, and a city that straddles a county line is shown for its Monterey County part only.
The field an answer chooses from
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in Monterey County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Bars give each category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county among those ranked; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. See the method
Residential remodelers lead the field for crowding in Monterey County: 66 established locations, 2.8x a typical county, with the category as a whole up 14.2% since 2017. Roofing contractors (14 established locations, 2.1x) and real estate agents and brokers (14 established locations, 1.6x) follow, also denser than a typical county. Insurance agencies are the least crowded category here at 0.6x typical (26 established locations), which leaves more room for a well-documented business to be noticed.
The fastest growth is in roofing contractors: locations of every size rose 23.5% since 2017, to 42, so new names keep appearing. Insurance agencies contracted by 16.1% since 2017, to 104 locations. The biggest employers sit in physicians offices, where 21 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how often people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.
Housing demand
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Data: Building Permits Survey, county annual files, and a like-for-like year-to-date comparison. An approval is not a completed home.
From a high of 1,086 units in 2022, approvals in Monterey County dropped to 813 in 2025, about 25% less, and the 2025 rate of 18.9 per 10,000 residents is below 64% of counties. Through the first eight months of 2026, 505 units were approved against 454 in the same months of 2025 (+11.2%).
Among businesses tied to building, residential remodelers (2.8x typical) and roofing contractors (2.1x typical) are the busiest in Monterey County. Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.

Bristol County, MA has 5.1% of its advice-led locations at 20 or more employees against 4.1% in Monterey County. Treat the match as a read on the competition, not a promise about results.
Check the math
GEO is part of the monthly Organic Growth plans, so the useful question is how many new customers a plan has to bring in to cover its cost. Customers from AI answers, search and Google Maps all count, and nobody can promise any of them.
What GEO includes
LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema
We add schema markup to your key pages, including LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ schema, so AI engines can read who you are, where you work in Monterey County and what you offer.
Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more
Conflicting listings are found and fixed, so your details read the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and beyond.
Written for the questions people ask
Content is written in a conversational tone, aimed at the local questions customers actually ask, focused on Monterey County first and foremost.
What customers say
Engines look at how many reviews you have and how customers feel about you; we help you collect and respond to them consistently.
Crawlable, fast, clean
The groundwork is technical SEO: pages that load, can be crawled and carry the structure the rest of GEO adds to.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews
Each month we test your visibility across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and reporting covers knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
None of this stands alone: it is part of Organic Growth, with local SEO and Google Maps work beside it and a managed website on Gold and Platinum. Want leads sooner? We also manage Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google and Bing ads.
What happens, in order
We check your business name, phone number and address and your website details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other listings AI engines read, so everything matches.
We implement schema markup on your most important pages: FAQ, LocalBusiness and Review schema, so engines can read who you are, where you work and what you offer.
We produce plain-language, hyper-local content that responds to the questions customers put to assistants about what you do and where you do it.
Each month we measure your visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then adapt the work to what we find. The report covers knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
Monthly plans
You do not buy GEO separately, because it is included in all three Organic Growth plans below. You can start with no setup fee and leave whenever you like. Ask our CEO which plan fits.
Questions
GEO is included in Organic Growth rather than priced on its own. Silver is $1,495 a month, Gold is $2,495 and Platinum is $3,495. Gold and Platinum also bring a custom-built website we host and maintain. Everything is month to month.
No, they are separate. Some ChatGPT users on the Free and lower-priced plans now see labeled, sponsored ads that advertisers buy in a self-serve Ads Manager, with targeting by country and context. The ads do not affect the answers, and measuring them is still maturing. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
Not required. GEO starts with an audit of the details engines read, then schema markup on important pages and new local content. A new website is available but not necessary: the Gold and Platinum plans include a fully managed, custom-built site.
That is not something anyone can guarantee. What we can do is the groundwork engines rely on: consistent details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and other listings, schema markup and local content. Because engines build trust in information gradually, any promised date would be a guess. Every month we check Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity and send you the results.
It is especially useful for several locations. AI tools need consistent, verified data to recommend a business locally, which makes matching names, addresses, phone numbers and hours on Apple Maps, Google and Yelp important at each location. In Monterey County, 4.1% of advice-led locations belong to larger firms, those with 20 or more employees.
A timeframe would be a guess, because engines decide how quickly they trust new or corrected information. The work follows a set order: audit, schema, content, and each month after that we check Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity and change course where needed. A busy category such as residential remodelers in Monterey County is a reason to be thorough, not a prediction of speed.
You get schema markup (Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ), matching listings across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and others, conversational content written for local questions, reviews and reputation work, technical SEO, and monitoring across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Reporting covers citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
About average. Monterey County comes in at 60.2 on our AI Answer Competition Index, placing 487th among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 285th within our 400-market set. Residential remodelers are where the field is busiest, at 2.8 times the typical county. Remember that the index measures businesses, not AI behavior.
SEO helps pages rank in a list of results, while GEO prepares your information for engines that answer in a sentence or two. The engines include Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT; the practice is also called AEO. The two share groundwork, so Organic Growth includes both.
