Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsAdvice-led businesses in Ulster County are mostly tiny, with 72.6% under five employees, which is the backdrop for Ulster County GEO. GetPhound's GEO services prepare a business for AI search: consistent details across the listings engines read, structured data on key pages and local content that answers real questions, all inside our Organic Growth plans. The data below shows the market you would be working in.
The market in numbers
AI Answer Competition Index
56.7/ 100
Ranked 589 among the 1,822 counties with 20,000 or more residents, and 317 within our own 400-market set. A higher score means more established businesses are sharing the same pool of AI answers. The method behind the score
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Every county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Ulster County scores 56.7, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Beyond the score, Ulster County is a county where advice-led businesses are mostly tiny, with fewer than five employees and a county with many residents outside any named place. Below, each measure is set against the full list of counties.
Each percentile places Ulster County among the 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents, as the share of them with a lower value. Built from: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Population by place
These are the biggest places in Ulster County. Someone asking an assistant about a provider nearby will usually name one of them, which is why plans for answer engine optimization (AEO) in Ulster County start with the towns on this list.
| City or town | Percent of all county residents | 2023 population estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Kingston | 13% | 23,777 |
| New Paltz | 5% | 8,552 |
| Ellenville | 2% | 4,174 |
| Saugerties | 2% | 3,848 |
Population numbers come from Census Bureau estimates. A place can be a city, a town or a census-designated place, and a city that straddles a county line is shown for its Ulster County part only.
Local profile
Ulster County is a market of small shops. Only 27.4% of its 748 locations in the eleven recommendation categories have five or more employees, a smaller share than in 90% of counties. Owners that busy tend to leave listings, reviews and structured data thin or out of date, which is an opening for a business that keeps them accurate.
Two other features of the Ulster County market matter here. 141,982 residents of Ulster County live outside any named place. Median household income in Ulster County is $84,593, above 84% of counties.
What this means for GEO services for Ulster County businesses: with mostly tiny competitors, a business that keeps its listings, schema and reviews current has less to compete against.
Size matters for context: 182,333 residents put Ulster County 378th among 3,143 U.S. counties, and the population has changed +0.3% since the 2020 Census. All industries together have 5,038 employer locations, or 27.6 per 1,000 people.
Kingston (23,777), New Paltz (8,552), Ellenville (4,174) and Saugerties (3,848) lead the list of places in Ulster County. Each is a separate local context, which is why GEO for a multi-town business is built place by place, with pages and data for every area it serves.
78% of the county, about 141,982 people, lives outside any named place, where "near me" and county-wide questions count for as much as a city name.
Who else could be named
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in Ulster County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. Method
Residential remodelers are the most contested category in Ulster County: 29 established locations, 2.9 times the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole up 22.7% since 2017. A person asking an assistant which remodeler to hire has the most names to sort through here. Denser than usual as well: electrical contractors (26 established locations, 1.5x) and law offices (17 established locations, 1.3x). Room exists in physicians offices, where 31 established locations come to just 0.8x a typical county.
Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors added the most new competition, 26.8% more locations of all sizes than in 2017 (90 now). Dentists shrank instead, losing 20.3% of their locations to land at 47. The biggest employers sit in physicians offices, where 8 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how often people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.

Kitsap County, WA has 4.3% of its advice-led locations at 20 or more employees against 2.8% in Ulster County. Treat the match as a read on the competition, not a promise about results.
New construction
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Data: Building Permits Survey, county annual files, and a like-for-like year-to-date comparison. Approved units may not be built yet.
Ulster County approved 603 units in 2025 against 342 in 2021, a gain of 76%; per 10,000 residents that is 33.1, above 57% of counties. Year to date (January through August), approvals stand at 414, compared with 320 a year ago, a change of +29.4%.
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in Ulster County are residential remodelers (2.9x typical) and electrical contractors (1.5x typical). Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.
What is in the work
Markup engines can read
We add schema markup to your key pages, including FAQ, LocalBusiness and Review schema, so an engine can read your business details as structured facts.
NAP across every listing
Conflicting listings are found and fixed, so your details read the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and beyond.
Written for the questions people ask
Hyper-local content answers real customer questions in plain, conversational language, focused on Ulster County and the towns around it.
Steady, current reviews
Engines look at how many reviews you have and how customers feel about you; we help you collect and respond to them consistently.
Crawlable, fast, clean
Technical SEO keeps your site readable by search engines and AI tools, and it is the foundation the rest of the work stands on.
Tested every month
Each month we test your visibility across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT, and reporting covers local rankings, AI visibility, citations, knowledge panels and platform traffic.
GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. Want leads sooner? We also manage Bing, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google ads.
How it works
We compare your NAP details and your website details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other listings AI engines pull from, so they all agree.
We add schema markup on the pages that matter most: LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema and Review schema, so engines can read who you are, where you work and what you offer.
We produce local content in a conversational tone that speaks to what your customers actually ask about what you do and where you do it.
Each month we run tests of your visibility across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, then change course based on what moves. You see citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
What it costs
GEO comes inside the Organic Growth plans, not as a separate purchase. None of the plans has a setup fee or a contract. Ask our CEO which plan fits.
Try your own numbers
Whether GEO pays off for you depends on your own figures, not a market average. Enter what a customer is worth and the plan you are weighing to see how many new customers a month cover it.
FAQ
GEO is not sold on its own: it is included in every Organic Growth plan. The plans are $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum) a month, and Gold and Platinum add a fully managed, custom-built website. You pay no setup fee and sign no contract.
SEO helps pages rank in a list of results, while GEO prepares your information for engines that answer in a sentence or two. That covers Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT, and some people call it AEO. The two share groundwork, so Organic Growth includes both.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Reports cover AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
Nobody can, including us. Our part is the groundwork that gives an engine more to go on: consistent details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and other listings, schema markup and local content. Engines gather and validate information over time, so there is no honest deadline. Each month we test visibility across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT and report what we see.
Multi-location businesses benefit most. To recommend a service locally, AI tools need consistent, verified data, which makes matching names, addresses, phone figures and hours on Yelp, Google and Apple Maps important at each location. 2.8% of advice-led locations in Ulster County have 20 or more employees.
Your name, phone number and address, plus details like hours and services, should be the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and anywhere else an engine looks. That is what the audit at the start of our process checks, as mismatched details make it harder for an engine to describe you correctly.
GEO adds to SEO instead of taking its place, and Organic Growth includes both. Technical SEO is part of the GEO work itself, and the same accurate data, solid pages and reviews that help you in search give AI engines more to draw on. Both are in the Organic Growth plans.
About average. Ulster County registers 56.7 on our AI Answer Competition Index, placing 589th among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 317th within our 400-market set. Residential remodelers are where the field is most crowded, at 2.9 times the typical county. Remember that the index measures businesses, not AI behavior.
They are two separate things. Advertisers can buy labeled, sponsored ads in ChatGPT through a self-serve Ads Manager, and some Free and lower-priced plan users see them. Measurement is still maturing, and the ads do not influence the answers. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
