Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsWhen someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview for a name, the answer comes from information the engine can find and trust. Baltimore is losing residents, and that shapes how Baltimore GEO should be approached. Below is the market data, then what GEO covers and what it costs.
Snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
49.8/ 100
Currently ranked 803 among the 1,822 counties that have 20,000 or more people, and 363 within our own 400-market set. More established businesses per resident push the score up. How the score is built
Think of the index as a headcount of established competition, those with five or more employees, in eleven recommendation categories, for each 10,000 residents and compared across each county of 20,000 or more people. The categories are law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical and auto repair. Baltimore scores 49.8, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Beyond the score, Baltimore is a city where the headcount is flat or falling and a city where larger firms, those with 20 or more employees, hold an outsized share of advice-led locations. Below, every measure is set against the full list of counties.
A percentile here is the share of the 1,822 ranked counties (20,000 or more residents) that fall below Baltimore's figure. Drawn from: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns for 2017 and 2022, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Baltimore has lost 3.5% of its population since the 2020 Census and now has 565,239 residents. When a market shrinks, the customers who remain are the ones every competitor wants, and being described accurately and favorably when an assistant is asked is part of keeping them.
Two more details round out the picture. 10.2% of the advice-led locations in Baltimore have 20 or more employees, more than in 98% of counties. Advice-led locations in Baltimore changed -14.1% from 2017 to 2022, slower than in 95% of counties.
What this means for GEO services for Baltimore businesses: with the population falling, the goal is to hold your share of the households that remain.
Baltimore is dense, and questions are often about a neighborhood or about what is nearby as much as about the city. GEO here comes down to precise service-area data, consistent listings and content for the specific services you offer.
New construction
Each bar counts housing units approved for construction. From the Building Permits Survey (Census Bureau): annual county data plus matching January-to-August totals. Approved units may not be built yet.
Permits peaked at 1,843 units in 2023 and came in at 544 in 2025, roughly 70% lower. Even so, 2025 equals 9.6 units for every 10,000 residents, which is below 83% of counties. Through the first eight months of 2026, 701 units were approved against 430 in the same months of 2025 (+63%).
Among businesses tied to building, real estate agents and brokers (1.7x typical) and residential remodelers (1.1x typical) are the most crowded in Baltimore. Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.
Who shares the answer
Every row is one of the eleven recommendation categories: established locations (five or more employees) in Baltimore, how that compares with the typical county, how the category as a whole has changed since 2017, and how many locations are large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. Method
Law offices are the most contested category in Baltimore: 169 established locations, 4.1 times the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole down 14.7% since 2017. A person asking an assistant which law firm to call has the most names to sort through here. Denser than usual as well: real estate agents and brokers (20 established locations, 1.7x). Room exists in insurance agencies, where 23 established locations come to just 0.4x a typical county.
Physicians offices contracted by 25.7% since 2017, to 237 locations. Larger firms cluster in law offices: 50 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how frequently people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.

Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, index score, firm size, growth and established share. See the sources above.
St. Louis, MO is the nearest match, scoring 63.6 against Baltimore's 49.8. At the other extreme sits Marion County, IN, scoring 69.9. The mix of firm sizes differs too: 7.6% of Hinds County, MS's advice-led locations have 20 or more employees, against 10.2% here. A similar score means a comparable number of established competitors, not a comparable result.
The process
We review your name, address and phone details and your site information across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other sources AI engines look, so they all agree.
We add schema markup on your key pages: Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ markup, so your business is described in a format machines read well.
We create local content in a conversational tone that answers the questions people ask about what you do and where you do it.
Each month we measure your visibility across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT, then adapt the work to what we find. You see knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
What is in the work
LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema
Schema markup goes onto your most important pages: LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ, so your business is described in a format machines handle well.
Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more
Your name, address and phone number are made to match across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look.
Hyper-local and conversational
Hyper-local content answers real customer questions in plain, conversational language, focused on Baltimore and the towns around it.
Volume and sentiment
Engines look at how many reviews you have and how customers feel about you; we help you collect and respond to them consistently.
Crawlable, fast, clean
The groundwork is technical SEO: pages that load, can be crawled and carry the structure the rest of GEO adds to.
AI visibility reporting
Monthly tests across AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT feed a report covering AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. Want leads sooner? We also manage Google, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Bing ads.
Run your own numbers
The plans are flat monthly fees, which makes the payback arithmetic simple: what one new customer is worth to you, your margin and your close rate give the customers a month a plan has to deliver.
Monthly plans
You do not buy GEO separately, because it is included in all three Organic Growth plans below. None of the plans has a setup fee or a contract. Talk it through with our CEO.
Questions
You cannot buy GEO by itself: every Organic Growth plan includes it. Silver costs $1,495 a month, Gold $2,495 and Platinum $3,495, and the two higher plans include a fully managed, custom-built website. No setup fee, no contract.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT. Reports cover AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
These names mostly mean the same thing: generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization and AI search optimization all describe preparing your business for engines that answer directly, like Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. The engines rely on structured data, listings and trusted content, which is why GEO works with SEO and not against it.
Nobody can, including us. Our part is the groundwork that gives an engine more to go on: matching details on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other listings, schema markup and local content. Because engines build trust in information gradually, any promised date would be a guess. Each month we test visibility across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews and report what we see.
No. GEO works on the unpaid side: helping engines find accurate information about your business. ChatGPT advertising is a separate, paid test: labeled, sponsored ads that some users on the Free and lower-priced plans see, set up in a self-serve Ads Manager and aimed by country and context rather than keyword. Measurement is still maturing, and ads do not change the answers.
Reviews are read as part of the picture. Because engines scan review volume and sentiment, reputation work is part of GEO, along with Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema markup. No mention can be guaranteed, though a healthy, current set of reviews gives engines more to work with.
No contract and no setup fee: plans are flat-rate and month to month. We also work with one business per category in each city, so we will not set you up against a direct competitor of yours in Baltimore.
About average. Baltimore scores 49.8 on our AI Answer Competition Index, ranking 803rd among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 363rd within our 400-market set. Law offices are where the field is most crowded, at 4.1 times the typical county. Remember that the index measures businesses, not AI behavior.
Yes, and multi-location businesses tend to benefit most, because AI tools need consistent, verified information to recommend a service locally. The audit step checks that every address is described the same way everywhere engines look. For reference, 10.2% of advice-led locations in Baltimore are larger employers.
