Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsAI assistants answer local questions directly, and what they say depends on what they can verify. King County is a high-income market. That is the context for answer engine optimization (AEO) in King County with GetPhound: audited business data, schema markup, conversational local content and monthly monitoring, included in Organic Growth.
Market at a glance
AI Answer Competition Index
73.9/ 100
Currently ranked 140 among the 1,822 counties of at least 20,000 people, and 98 within our own 400-market set. More established businesses per resident push the score up. The method behind the score
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Each county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. King County scores 73.9, which is more crowded than most.
The score is only part of the picture. King County is an affluent county, and it is also a county made up of many sizeable towns. Each measure below places it among all counties.
Percentiles compare King County with all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents: a percentile is the share of those counties with a lower value. Inputs: Census Bureau population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
Where the customers are
The largest places in King County by resident count. For answer engine optimization (AEO) in King County, the work is place by place: each service you offer can have content for each town you serve.
| City or town | Portion of the county | People (2023 estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle | 33% | 755,078 |
| Bellevue | 7% | 151,574 |
| Kent | 6% | 133,378 |
| Renton | 5% | 104,491 |
| Federal Way | 4% | 97,701 |
| Kirkland | 4% | 91,194 |
Population numbers come from Census Bureau estimates. A place can be a city, a town or a census-designated place, so a city split between counties is counted only where it lies in King County.
What stands out
Higher incomes ($120,672 median household income, above 98% of counties) change how people choose in King County: they weigh reviews, credentials and detail, not just price. AI engines scan review volume and sentiment too, which is why reviews and structured data sit at the center of our GEO work.
The headline is not the only thing worth reading. King County has 33 communities above 2,500 residents, 25 of them above 10,000, more than 99% of counties. 6.7% of the advice-led locations in King County have 20 or more employees, more than in 88% of counties.
For anyone weighing GEO in King County, buyers who compare closely read reviews and detail, so depth matters more than speed.
Size matters for context: 2,271,380 residents put King County 12th among 3,143 U.S. counties, and the population has changed +0.1% since the 2020 Census. All industries together have 70,530 employer locations, or 31.1 per 1,000 people.
No single place dominates King County: the largest, Seattle, has about 33% of residents, and others include Bellevue (151,574), Kent (133,378), Renton (104,491) and Federal Way (97,701). An assistant asked about a service in one of them draws on local detail for that town, not for the whole county.
The field an answer chooses from
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in King County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. Method
Real estate agents and brokers lead the field for crowding in King County: 224 established locations, 4.7x a typical county, with the category as a whole up 41.9% since 2017. Law offices (473 established locations, 2.9x) and residential remodelers (343 established locations, 2.7x) follow, also denser than a typical county. Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors are the least crowded category here at 0.7x typical (218 established locations), which leaves more room for a well-documented business to be noticed.
Growth is highest in that same category: 41.9% more locations of any size since 2017. The one category moving backward is plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, down 14.3% to 456 locations. Physicians offices account for the most large employers, with 182 locations at 20 or more employees.
A word of caution: this table counts businesses. It does not measure how frequently an assistant is asked about any category, which businesses it names, or how many people use one. A crowded category calls for careful preparation and a quiet one for early action, but neither is a forecast.
Where demand is heading
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Data: Building Permits Survey, county annual files, and a like-for-like year-to-date comparison. An approval is not a completed home.
Permits peaked at 19,549 units in 2021 and came in at 8,453 in 2025, roughly 57% lower. Even so, 2025 equals 37.2 units for every 10,000 residents, which is above 62% of counties. The 2026 year-to-date count is 7,409 units to 4,222 last year, +75.5%.
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in King County are real estate agents and brokers (4.7x typical) and residential remodelers (2.7x typical). Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.

Questions we hear
The short version: GEO is bundled into Organic Growth, not sold alone. It is part of Silver ($1,495 a month), Gold ($2,495) and Platinum ($3,495). A website, custom built and fully managed, comes with Gold and Platinum. None of the plans has a setup fee or a contract.
Whichever you serve. King County has 33 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, Renton and Federal Way. GEO content is hyper-local, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages (the monthly volume depends on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum) give each service its own page in each place you cover.
It means your name, address, phone number and details like hours and services are identical on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and each other source an engine might read. Our process starts with an audit of precisely that, because conflicting details make it harder for an engine to describe you correctly.
GEO is described as the next evolution of SEO, which is why we deliver the two together: the AI-focused work alongside technical SEO, landing pages and reviews. See the Organic Growth page for the full list.
They are different things. GEO is unpaid work: helping engines find accurate information about your business. ChatGPT advertising is a separate, paid test: sponsored, labeled ads shown to some users on the Free and lower-priced plans, bought through a self-serve Ads Manager and targeted by country and context, not by keyword. Measurement is still maturing, and ads do not change the answers.
More than most. King County comes in at 73.9 on our AI Answer Competition Index, ranking 140th among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 98th within our 400-market set. Real estate agents and brokers are where the field is most crowded, at 4.7 times the typical county. Remember that the index measures businesses, not AI behavior.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Reporting covers local rankings, AI visibility, citations, knowledge panels and platform traffic.
No, and we do not promise one. No one controls what an AI engine says. Our work is to make what engines can find about you accurate, consistent and well structured, and over time engines gather, validate and favor consistent information. We give no timeframe, but we test your visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity every month and show you what is changing.
These names mostly mean the same thing: generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization and AI search optimization all describe getting your business ready for engines that give direct answers, such as Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT. They draw on structured data, listings and trusted content, so the work complements SEO rather than replacing it.
