Snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
69.4/ 100
Ranked 244 among the 1,822 counties that have 20,000 or more people, and 158 within our own 400-market set. A higher number means a more crowded field of established competitors. How we work it out
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Each county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Snohomish County scores 69.4, which is more crowded than most.
Snohomish County has two traits worth noting: it is a county made up of many sizeable towns, and it is an affluent county. The measures below show where it stands against every other county.
Percentiles compare Snohomish County with all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents: a percentile is the share of those counties with a lower value. Drawn from: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
The AI answer picture
Many towns, many questions: Snohomish County counts 16 communities that clear 2,500 residents and 12 that clear 10,000, a bigger spread than 96% of counties offer. A plumber in Everett and a plumber in the next town over are separate answers, so GEO for a business that serves several of them means local content and consistent details for each.
The headline is not the only thing worth reading. Median household income in Snohomish County is $106,067, above 96% of counties. 5% of the advice-led locations in Snohomish County have 20 or more employees, more than in 77% of counties.
When it comes to GEO in Snohomish County, think town by town: each place deserves its own local content and consistent details.
Size matters for context: 844,761 residents put Snohomish County 74th among 3,143 U.S. counties, and the population has changed +2% since the 2020 Census. All industries together have 20,218 employer locations, or 23.9 per 1,000 people.
Outside any named place (a city, town or census-designated place) live 367,173 of Snohomish County's residents (43%), and their questions often skip the town name entirely and ask for something "near me" instead.
Where people live
The largest places in Snohomish County by resident count. For answer engine optimization (AEO) in Snohomish County, the work is place by place: each service you offer can have content for each town you serve.
| Place | Percent of all county residents | 2023 population estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Everett | 13% | 111,180 |
| Marysville | 9% | 72,916 |
| Lynnwood | 5% | 43,867 |
| Edmonds | 5% | 42,701 |
| Lake Stevens | 5% | 40,521 |
| Mountlake Terrace | 3% | 21,516 |
Population numbers come from Census Bureau estimates. A place can be a city, a town or a census-designated place, and a city shared with a neighboring county appears with just the Snohomish County portion.
Who shares the answer
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in Snohomish County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. See the method
The busiest category in Snohomish County is roofing contractors, with 61 established locations at 4.6x the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole up 45.4% since 2017. More comparable names means more weight on the details that tell them apart. The next busiest categories are residential remodelers (117 established locations, 2.5x) and real estate agents and brokers (33 established locations, 1.9x). The lightest field belongs to physicians offices: 116 established locations, 0.6x the typical density, so an answer in that category has fewer names to weigh.
Real estate agents and brokers added the most new competition, 58.7% more locations of all sizes than in 2017 (546 now). The one category moving backward is physicians offices, down 18.3% to 210 locations. Physicians offices account for the most large employers, with 47 locations at 20 or more employees.
A word of caution: this table counts businesses. It does not measure how frequently an assistant is asked about any category, which businesses it names, or how many people use one. A crowded category calls for careful preparation and a quiet one for early action, but neither is a forecast.
Where demand is heading
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Source: Census Bureau Building Permits Survey, annual county files, with a same-months comparison for this year. An approval is not a completed home.
Permits peaked at 5,122 units in 2021 and came in at 3,409 in 2025, roughly 33% lower. Even so, 2025 equals 40.4 units for every 10,000 residents, which is above 65% of counties. The 2026 year-to-date count is 2,342 units to 2,377 last year, -1.5%.
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in Snohomish County are roofing contractors (4.6x typical) and residential remodelers (2.5x typical). New households arrive without providers they trust, and a business whose details already match across the places AI engines read is easier for them to find described.

One visible difference is firm size, with 6.7% of advice-led locations in Pierce County, WA at 20 or more employees against 5% in Snohomish County. These are neighbors in competition only; they say nothing about what to expect from AI engines.

Fees
GEO is not sold on its own: it is included in every Organic Growth plan below. Every plan is month to month, with no setup fee and no contract. Talk to our CEO about the options.
Questions we hear
The fee is flat and billed monthly, and GEO is built into the Organic Growth plans instead of being priced on its own: $1,495 for Silver, $2,495 for Gold and $3,495 for Platinum. RankGuarantee™ local landing pages cost $495 a month on their own and are included in all three. Everything is month to month, with no setup fee and no contract.
According to the index, Snohomish County is more crowded than most counties: it scores 69.4, which is 244th out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 158th of our 400 markets. The busiest category is roofing contractors, at 4.6x a typical county. The score measures how many established competitors there are, and it cannot predict what an engine will say.
The ones you serve. Snohomish County has 16 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Everett, Marysville, Lynnwood, Edmonds and Lake Stevens. Content under GEO is hyper-local, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages (25 a month on Silver, 50 on Gold and 100 on Platinum) create a page for each service in each place you cover.
It means your name, address, phone number and details like hours and services are identical on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and each other source an engine might read. The first step in our process is an audit of exactly that, as mismatched details make it harder for an engine to describe you correctly.
People describe GEO as the next evolution of SEO, which is why we deliver the two together: local landing pages, technical SEO, review work and the AI-focused pieces. See the Organic Growth page for the full list.
Of the eleven recommendation categories, the biggest in Snohomish County by established locations are dentists (276), plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (129) and electrical contractors (128). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are roofing contractors (4.6x) and residential remodelers (2.5x).
Think of SEO as winning a place in a list of links and GEO as making your details usable to engines that answer directly. The engines include ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity; the practice is also called AEO. Because they share groundwork, we deliver both in Organic Growth.
It would be dishonest to promise an AI mention, so we do not. We aim for accurate, consistent information that matches wherever an engine looks. Results improve over time as engines favor consistent information, and we give no schedule. You see monthly test results from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
No. GEO is the unpaid side: helping engines find accurate information about your business. ChatGPT advertising is a separate, paid test: labeled, sponsored ads that some users on the Free and lower-priced plans see, set up in a self-serve Ads Manager and aimed by country and context rather than keyword. The ads do not alter the answers, and measurement is still maturing.
