Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsWhen someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview for a name, the answer comes from information the engine can find and trust. Maricopa County has 23 places of 2,500 or more residents, each asking its own local questions, which sets the terms for AI search optimization in Maricopa County. Below is the market data, then what GEO covers and what it costs.
The market in numbers
AI Answer Competition Index
71.9/ 100
Placed 179 among the 1,822 counties with 20,000 or more residents, and 118 within our own 400-market set. More established businesses per resident push the score up. How the score is built
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Every county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Maricopa County scores 71.9, which is more crowded than most.
Beyond the score, Maricopa County is a county made up of many sizeable towns and a county where larger firms, those with 20 or more employees, hold an outsized share of advice-led locations. Below, every measure is set against the full list of counties.
Percentiles compare Maricopa County with all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents: a percentile is the share of those counties with a lower value. Drawn from: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
The AI answer picture
With 23 places above 2,500 residents (16 of them topping 10,000), Maricopa County has more distinct towns than 98% of counties. Local questions generally name a town, so conversational, hyper-local content for each place you serve, backed by RankGuarantee™ landing pages, gives AI engines something specific to draw on for each one.
The headline is not the only thing worth reading. 6.7% of the advice-led locations in Maricopa County have 20 or more employees, more than in 88% of counties. Median household income in Maricopa County is $86,973, above 86% of counties.
What this means for GEO in Maricopa County: think town by town: each place deserves its own local content and consistent details.
Home to 4,585,871 people, Maricopa County is the 4th largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved +3.6% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 107,648 locations here across all industries, roughly 23.5 for every 1,000 residents.
Population by place
The largest places in Maricopa County by resident count. For answer engine optimization (AEO) in Maricopa County, the work is place by place: each service you offer can have content for each town you serve.
| Place name | Percent of all county residents | People (2023 estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Phoenix | 36% | 1,650,070 |
| Mesa | 11% | 511,648 |
| Chandler | 6% | 280,167 |
| Gilbert | 6% | 275,411 |
| Glendale | 6% | 253,855 |
| Scottsdale | 5% | 244,394 |
Figures are Census Bureau population estimates. Places here are cities, towns and census-designated places, so a city split between counties is counted only where it lies in Maricopa County.
The field an answer chooses from
Read each row across: Maricopa County's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. How we calculate this
Real estate agents and brokers are the most contested category in Maricopa County: 272 established locations, 2.9 times the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole up 48% since 2017. A person asking an assistant which agent to list with has the most names to sort through here. Denser than usual as well: roofing contractors (138 established locations, 1.9x) and law offices (602 established locations, 1.8x). Room exists in insurance agencies, where 425 established locations come to just 0.9x a typical county.
Real estate agents and brokers are also the fastest-growing category, up 48% since 2017, so the field is still filling in. The one category moving backward is physicians offices, down 0.7% to 3,383 locations. Physicians offices account for the most large employers, with 429 locations at 20 or more employees.
A word of caution: this table counts businesses. It does not measure how frequently an assistant is asked about any category, which businesses it names, or how many people use one. A crowded category calls for careful preparation and a quiet one for early action, but neither is a forecast.
Demand signal
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Data: Building Permits Survey, county annual files, and a like-for-like year-to-date comparison. An approval is not a completed home.
From a high of 42,123 units in 2021, approvals in Maricopa County dropped to 31,097 in 2025, about 26% less, and the 2025 rate of 67.8 per 10,000 residents is above 84% of counties. The 2026 year-to-date count is 17,747 units to 19,658 last year, -9.7%.
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in Maricopa County are real estate agents and brokers (2.9x typical) and roofing contractors (1.9x typical). Rising permits bring people who need a roofer or an electrician and have no one to ask, and falling permits shift questions toward repair and replacement. Either way, accurate local information is what GEO works on.

Maricopa County (71.9) looks most like San Diego County, CA, which scores 70.3. At the other extreme sits Riverside County, CA, scoring 58.4. The mix of firm sizes differs too: 4.8% of San Diego County, CA's advice-led locations have 20 or more employees, against 6.7% here. A comparable score means a comparable number of established competitors, not a comparable result.

SEO underneath
A clean technical base lets search engines and AI engines read your pages without trouble.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews
Visibility is tested monthly in Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, with reports on local rankings, AI visibility, citations, knowledge panels and platform traffic.
GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. If you need customers while this builds, our paid ads team manages Bing, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google campaigns.
Our process
We check your business name, phone number and address and your site information across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look, so everything matches.
We install schema markup on the pages that matter most: LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema and Review schema, so your business is described in a format machines read well.
We produce plain-language, hyper-local content that answers the questions people ask about your services and the places you serve.
Each month we measure your visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, then adjust the plan to the results. The report covers citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
Plans
GEO comes inside the Organic Growth plans, not as a separate purchase. Every plan is month to month, with no setup fee and no contract. Walk through the plans with our CEO.
FAQ
GEO is not a standalone product: it is included in every Organic Growth plan. Silver costs $1,495 a month, Gold $2,495 and Platinum $3,495, and the two higher plans include a fully managed, custom-built website. You pay no setup fee and sign no contract.
No. GEO is the unpaid side: making accurate information about your business easy for engines to use. ChatGPT advertising is a separate, paid test: labeled, sponsored ads that some users on the Free and lower-priced plans see, set up in a self-serve Ads Manager and aimed by country and context rather than keyword. The ads do not alter the answers, and measurement is still maturing.
We cannot, and neither can anyone else. What we can do is the groundwork engines rely on: matching details on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other listings, schema markup and local content. Engines gather and validate information over time, so there is no honest deadline. Each month we test visibility across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity and report what we see.
Reviews are one of the signals. Engines read review volume and sentiment, which is why reviews and reputation are part of what we do, together with FAQ, LocalBusiness and Review schema. We cannot promise a mention; a healthy, current review profile simply gives engines more information.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Each report includes citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
SEO helps pages rank in a list of results, while GEO prepares your information for engines that answer in a sentence or two. That covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and some people call it AEO. Because they share groundwork, we deliver both in Organic Growth.
By our count, Maricopa County is more crowded than most counties: it scores 71.9, which is 179th out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 118th of our 400 markets. The busiest category is real estate agents and brokers, at 2.9x a typical county. The score measures how many established competitors there are, and it cannot predict what an engine will say.
It means your name, address and phone number, and other details such as hours and services, read the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and everywhere else an AI engine might look. Our process starts with an audit of precisely that, since conflicting details make it harder for engines to describe you accurately.
GEO is often framed as SEO's next step, which is why we deliver the two together: local landing pages, technical SEO, review work and the AI-focused pieces. Details are on the Organic Growth page.
