Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsLarger firms are common in Harris County, with 7% of advice-led locations at 20 or more employees, and that shapes how GEO should be done here. GetPhound's generative engine optimization prepares a business for AI search: consistent details across the listings engines read, structured data on key pages and local content that answers real questions, all inside our Organic Growth plans. The data below shows the Harris County market.
Snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
64.9/ 100
Placed 367 among the 1,822 counties that have 20,000 or more people, and 231 within our own 400-market set. More established businesses per resident push the score up. How the score is built
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Each county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Harris County scores 64.9, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Beyond the score, Harris County is a county where larger firms, those with 20 or more employees, hold an outsized share of advice-led locations and a county made up of many sizeable towns. Below, every measure is set against the full list of counties.
Each percentile places Harris County among the 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents, as the share of them with a lower value. Built from: Census population estimates, County Business Patterns for 2017 and 2022, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
Where people live
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. Local questions usually name a town, so each of these is a separate context, and work on answer engine optimization (AEO) in Harris County can be written for any of them.
| Community | Percent of all county residents | People (2023 estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Houston (part) | 47% | 2,265,027 |
| Pasadena | 3% | 146,716 |
| Baytown (part) | 2% | 79,140 |
| La Porte | 1% | 36,991 |
| Deer Park | 1% | 33,176 |
| Bellaire | 0% | 17,016 |
Source: population estimates from the Census Bureau. Places here are cities, towns and census-designated places, so a city split between counties is counted only where it lies in Harris County.
Reading the market
Larger firms are unusually common in Harris County: 7% of the 17,826 locations in our eleven categories (1,253 in all) have 20 or more employees, a higher share than in 90% of counties. Bigger operations often run several locations, and AI tools need consistent, verified data to recommend a multi-location business locally, so accuracy at each address counts.
Two other features of the Harris County market matter here. Harris County has 27 communities above 2,500 residents, 15 of them above 10,000, more than 99% of counties. Harris County authorized 63.9 new homes per 10,000 residents in 2025, more than 82% of counties.
What this means for GEO services for Harris County businesses: larger firms can mean several locations, and consistent facts at each address are what let an independent keep up.
Home to 4,835,125 people, Harris County is the 3rd largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved +2.2% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 109,874 locations here across all industries, roughly 22.7 for every 1,000 residents.
Houston (2,265,027), Pasadena (146,716), Baytown (79,140), La Porte (36,991) and Deer Park (33,176) lead the list of places in Harris County. Each is a separate local context, which is why GEO for a multi-town business is built place by place, with pages and data for every area it serves.
43% of the county, about 2,066,903 people, lives outside any named place, where "near me" and county-wide questions count for as much as a city name.
The field an answer chooses from
Read each row across: Harris County's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. Method
Law offices are the most contested category in Harris County: 922 established locations, 2.6 times the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole up 6.6% since 2017. A person asking an assistant which law firm to call has the most names to sort through here. Denser than usual as well: real estate agents and brokers (171 established locations, 1.7x) and physicians offices (1,480 established locations, 1.4x). Room exists in residential remodelers, where 152 established locations come to just 0.6x a typical county.
Residential remodelers added the most new competition, 56.4% more locations of all sizes than in 2017 (887 now). Physicians offices shrank instead, losing 4.5% of their locations to land at 3,716. The biggest employers sit in physicians offices, where 304 locations have 20 or more employees.
Remember what a count can and cannot say. It tells you how many established businesses are in each category. It says nothing about AI mentions, search volume or timing, and nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer.
Housing demand
The permits shown are authorizations for new housing units. From the Building Permits Survey (Census Bureau): annual county data plus matching January-to-August totals. An approval is not a completed home.
From a high of 38,789 units in 2022, approvals in Harris County dropped to 30,879 in 2025, about 20% less, and the 2025 rate of 63.9 per 10,000 residents is above 82% of counties. Year to date (January through August), approvals stand at 18,596, compared with 20,327 a year ago, a change of -8.5%.
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in Harris County are real estate agents and brokers (1.7x typical) and roofing contractors (1.3x typical). Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.

What GEO includes
Schema on your key pages
Schema markup goes onto your most important pages: LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ, so AI engines can read who you are, where you work in Harris County and what you offer.
Name, address and phone
We make your name, phone and address details agree on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and each other listing engines read.
Answers, not keywords
We publish conversational, hyper-local content that answers the questions people put to assistants about your services, focused on Harris County first and foremost.
Steady, current reviews
Engines look at how many reviews you have and how customers feel about you; we help you collect and respond to them consistently.
SEO underneath
Technical SEO keeps your site readable by search engines and AI tools, and it is the foundation the rest of the work stands on.
AI visibility reporting
Monthly tests across Perplexity, AI Overviews and ChatGPT feed a report covering local rankings, AI visibility, citations, knowledge panels and platform traffic.
GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. Want leads sooner? We also manage Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google and Bing ads.
What happens, in order
We compare your business name, address and phone number and your site details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look, so every source tells the same story.
We install schema markup on your key pages: LocalBusiness, FAQ and Review schema, so AI engines can read your details as structured facts.
We publish local content in a conversational tone that speaks to what your customers actually ask about your services and the places you serve.
Each month we run tests of your visibility across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, then adjust the plan to the results. Reporting includes local rankings, AI visibility, citations, knowledge panels and platform traffic.
Fees
GEO is not sold on its own: it is included in every Organic Growth plan below. Plans are billed month to month, and there is no setup fee to pay. Talk it through with our CEO.
Run your own numbers
Whether GEO pays off for you depends on your own figures, not a market average. Enter what a customer is worth and the plan you are weighing to see how many new customers a month cover it.
Common questions
GEO is not sold on its own: every Organic Growth plan includes it. Silver costs $1,495 a month, Gold $2,495 and Platinum $3,495, and Gold and Platinum add a fully managed, custom-built website. You pay no setup fee and sign no contract.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (FAQ, LocalBusiness and Review schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT. Reporting covers citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
No, they are separate. Advertisers can buy labeled, sponsored ads in ChatGPT through a self-serve Ads Manager, and some Free and lower-priced plan users see them. Measurement is still maturing, and the ads do not influence the answers. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
About average. Harris County registers 64.9 on our AI Answer Competition Index, placing 367th among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 231st within our 400-market set. Law offices are the most crowded category here, at 2.6 times the typical county. Remember that the index measures businesses, not AI behavior.
SEO helps pages rank in a list of results, while GEO prepares your information for engines that answer in a sentence or two. The engines include ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity; the practice is also called AEO. The two share groundwork, so Organic Growth includes both.
Multi-location businesses benefit most. To recommend a service locally, AI tools need consistent, verified data, so the name, address, phone number and hours should match on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and elsewhere for every address. In Harris County, 7% of advice-led locations belong to larger firms, those with 20 or more employees.
Whichever you serve. Harris County has 27 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Houston, Pasadena, Baytown, La Porte and Deer Park. The GEO content is hyper-local, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages (25, 50 or 100 a month depending on the Organic Growth plan) give each service its own page in each place you cover.
We cannot, and neither can anyone else. Our part is the groundwork that gives an engine more to go on: consistent details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and other listings, schema markup and local content. Engines gather and validate information over time, so there is no honest deadline. Every month we check Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity and send you the results.
They count. AI engines scan review volume and sentiment, which is why reviews and reputation work sit alongside schema markup (including Review schema) and consistent business details in our plans.
