Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsSan Diego County has 18 places of 2,500 or more residents, each asking its own local questions, and that shapes how GEO should be done here. GetPhound's generative engine optimization prepares a business for AI search: consistent details across the listings engines read, structured data on key pages and local content that answers real questions, all inside our Organic Growth plans. The data below shows the San Diego County market.
The market in figures
AI Answer Competition Index
70.3/ 100
Placed 213 among the 1,822 counties that have 20,000 or more people, and 136 within our own 400-market set. The higher the score, the more established businesses there are for each answer to choose between. See how it is calculated
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Every county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. San Diego County scores 70.3, which is more crowded than most.
Look past the headline number and two features of San Diego County emerge: it is a county made up of many sizeable towns, and it is an affluent county. The measures below show where it stands against each other county.
A percentile here is the share of the 1,822 ranked counties (20,000 or more residents) that fall below San Diego County's figure. Inputs: Census Bureau population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Population by place
These are the biggest places in San Diego County. Someone asking an assistant about a provider nearby will generally name one of them, which is why plans for answer engine optimization (AEO) in San Diego County start with the towns on this list.
| Community | Slice of the county's population | Residents in 2023 (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| San Diego | 42% | 1,388,320 |
| Chula Vista | 8% | 274,333 |
| Oceanside | 5% | 170,020 |
| Escondido | 5% | 148,122 |
| Carlsbad | 3% | 113,495 |
| El Cajon | 3% | 102,991 |
Population numbers come from Census Bureau estimates. Places here are cities, towns and census-designated places, and a city shared with a neighboring county appears with just the San Diego County portion.
Reading the market
San Diego County is not one market but 18, one for each place of 2,500 or more people (17 are larger than 10,000), a count that beats 97% of counties. Hyper-local content that answers the questions asked in each town is the core of GEO in a county shaped like this.
Two more details round out the picture. Median household income in San Diego County is $103,476, above 95% of counties. Only 28.2% of the advice-led locations in San Diego County have five or more employees, a lower share than in 87% of counties.
For anyone weighing GEO services for San Diego County businesses, think town by town: each place deserves its own local content and consistent details.
Size matters for context: 3,269,973 residents put San Diego County 5th among 3,143 U.S. counties, and the population has changed -0.9% since the 2020 Census. All industries together have 92,799 employer locations, or 28.4 per 1,000 people.
Outside any named place (a city, town or census-designated place) live 508,011 of San Diego County's residents (16%), and their questions often skip the town name entirely and ask for something "near me" instead.
Who shares the answer
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in San Diego County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. Method
Real estate agents and brokers lead the field for crowding in San Diego County: 193 established locations, 2.8x a typical county, with the category as a whole up 32.2% since 2017. Law offices (588 established locations, 2.5x) and residential remodelers (431 established locations, 2.4x) follow, also denser than a typical county. Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors are the least crowded category here at 0.9x typical (409 established locations), which leaves more room for a well-documented business to be noticed.
Growth is highest in that same category: 32.2% more locations of any size since 2017. Insurance agencies contracted by 3.2% since 2017, to 1,321 locations. The biggest employers sit in physicians offices, where 184 locations have 20 or more employees.
Remember what a count can and cannot say. It tells you how many established businesses are in each category. It says nothing about AI mentions, search volume or timing, and nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer.
Where demand is heading
The permits shown are authorizations for new housing units. From the Building Permits Survey (Census Bureau): annual county data plus matching January-to-August totals. Approved units may not be built yet.
San Diego County approved 11,704 units in 2025 against 10,048 in 2021, a gain of 16%; per 10,000 residents that is 35.8, above 60% of counties. Through the first eight months of 2026, 6,392 units were approved against 7,543 in the same months of 2025 (-15.3%).
Among businesses tied to building, real estate agents and brokers (2.8x typical) and residential remodelers (2.4x typical) are the most crowded in San Diego County. New households arrive without providers they trust, and a business whose details already match across the places AI engines read is easier for them to find described.

What GEO includes
Markup engines can read
Schema markup goes onto your most important pages: LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ, so an engine can read your business details as structured facts.
Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more
Your name, phone number and address are made to match across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look.
Hyper-local and conversational
Hyper-local content answers real customer questions in plain, conversational language, focused on San Diego County first and foremost.
Volume and sentiment
Review volume and sentiment both get read by AI engines, so reputation work is part of the plan.
The groundwork
A clean technical base lets search engines and AI engines read your pages without trouble.
Tested every month
Monthly tests across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity feed a report covering AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. If you need customers while this builds, our paid ads team manages Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Bing and Google campaigns.
Our process
We check your business address, name and phone number and your site information across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other sources AI engines read, so every source tells the same story.
We put schema markup on your key pages: LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema and Review schema, so AI engines can read your details as structured facts.
We write local content in a conversational tone that speaks to what your customers actually ask about what you do and where you do it.
Each month we measure your visibility across Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, then adapt the work to what we find. You see AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
What it costs
The three Organic Growth plans below each include GEO, and it cannot be bought alone. Each plan is month to month, with no setup fee and no contract. Talk it through with our CEO.
Try your own numbers
Whether GEO pays off for you depends on your own figures, not a market average. Enter what a customer is worth and the plan you are weighing to see how many new customers a month cover it.
Questions
The short version: GEO is bundled into Organic Growth, not sold alone. Silver is $1,495 a month, Gold is $2,495 and Platinum is $3,495. Gold and Platinum also bring a custom-built website we host and maintain. Everything is month to month.
Whichever places you work in. San Diego County has 18 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by San Diego, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido and Carlsbad. Content under GEO is hyper-local, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages (25 a month on Silver, 50 on Gold and 100 on Platinum) give each service its own page in each place you cover.
It would be dishonest to promise an AI mention, so we do not. The goal is accurate, consistent facts that match across each source an engine reads. As engines gather, validate and favor consistent information, results improve over time, though we cannot say how long that takes. Monthly testing across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews keeps you informed.
No, they are separate. Some ChatGPT users on the Free and lower-priced plans now see labeled, sponsored ads that advertisers buy in a self-serve Ads Manager, with targeting by country and context. Measurement is still maturing, and the ads do not influence the answers. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
There is no honest timeline, and we will not invent one. AI engines gather, validate and favor consistent information gradually, so results depend on how complete your data is, how crowded your category is (real estate agents and brokers run 2.8x a typical county in San Diego County) and what engines already hold. Monthly monitoring tells us what is changing, and we adapt.
You can cancel anytime; there is no contract or setup fee. Every plan is billed month to month at a flat rate, and we accept one business per category in each city.
SEO helps pages rank in a list of results, while GEO prepares your information for engines that answer in a sentence or two. That covers Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, and some people call it AEO. Because they share groundwork, we deliver both in Organic Growth.
Schema and structured data (Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema), consistent name, address and phone details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, AI-targeted conversational content that is hyper-local, reviews and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Reports cover knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
