The market in numbers
AI Answer Competition Index
79.2/ 100
Placed 48 among the 1,822 counties of at least 20,000 people, and 35 within our own 400-market set. A higher number means a more crowded field of established competitors. How we work it out
Think of the index as a headcount of established competition, those with five or more employees, in eleven recommendation categories, for each 10,000 residents and compared across every county of 20,000 or more people. The categories are law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical and auto repair. Norfolk County scores 79.2, which is more crowded than most.
Look past the headline number and two features of Norfolk County emerge: it is a county with many established recommendation-category businesses for its size, and it is an affluent county. Each measure below places it among all counties.
Percentiles compare Norfolk County with all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents: a percentile is the share of those counties with a lower value. Drawn from: Census Bureau population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Norfolk County has 1,244 established businesses, meaning five or more employees, across the eleven categories where people ask an assistant to recommend someone. That is 17.1 for every 10,000 residents, more than in 91% of counties. With that many comparable names, an AI answer has plenty to choose from, which makes clear, consistent business details worth the effort.
Two other features of the Norfolk County market matter here. Median household income in Norfolk County is $123,449, above 99% of counties. 6.8% of the advice-led locations in Norfolk County have 20 or more employees, more than in 89% of counties.
What this means for GEO in Norfolk County: the crowd is the main fact: with this many established names an answer has plenty to choose from, and clear, consistent details do more work than volume.
Home to 727,473 people, Norfolk County is the 91st largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved +0.2% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 20,607 locations here across all industries, roughly 28.3 for every 1,000 residents.
No single place dominates Norfolk County: the largest, Quincy, has about 14% of residents, and others include Weymouth Town (59,114), Braintree Town (38,490), Randolph Town (34,487) and Franklin Town (33,125). An assistant asked about a service in one of them draws on local detail for that town, not for the whole county.
Outside any named place (a city, town or census-designated place) live 460,660 of Norfolk County's residents (63%), and their questions often skip the town name entirely and ask for something "near me" instead.
Communities
The largest places in Norfolk County by resident count. For answer engine optimization (AEO) in Norfolk County, the work is place by place: each service you offer can have content for each town you serve.
| Place name | Portion of the county | 2023 population estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Quincy | 14% | 101,597 |
| Weymouth Town | 8% | 59,114 |
| Braintree Town | 5% | 38,490 |
| Randolph Town | 5% | 34,487 |
| Franklin Town | 5% | 33,125 |
Figures are Census Bureau population estimates. Cities, towns and census-designated places all count as places, and a city shared with a neighboring county appears with just the Norfolk County portion.
Your competition
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in Norfolk County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. See the method
Residential remodelers are the most contested category in Norfolk County: 93 established locations, 2.3 times the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole up 34.1% since 2017. A person asking an assistant which remodeler to hire has the most names to sort through here. Denser than usual as well: accounting and CPA firms (86 established locations, 2.3x) and law offices (112 established locations, 2.1x).
Residential remodelers are also the fastest-growing category, up 34.1% since 2017, so the field is still filling in. Physicians offices shrank instead, losing 14.7% of their locations to land at 390. Larger firms cluster in physicians offices: 66 locations have 20 or more employees.
A word of caution: this table counts businesses. It does not measure how frequently an assistant is asked about any category, which businesses it names, or how many people use one. A crowded category calls for careful preparation and a quiet one for early action, but neither is a forecast.

Montgomery County, PA has 7.9% of its advice-led locations at 20 or more employees against 6.8% in Norfolk County. Treat the match as a read on the competition, not a promise about results.
New construction
Each bar counts housing units approved for construction. Source: Census Bureau Building Permits Survey, annual county files, with a same-months comparison for this year. An approval is not a completed home.
From a high of 2,418 units in 2021, approvals in Norfolk County dropped to 1,001 in 2025, about 59% less, and the 2025 rate of 13.8 per 10,000 residents is below 73% of counties. Year to date (January through August), approvals stand at 1,259, compared with 570 a year ago, a change of +120.9%.
The construction-linked categories with the most established competitors in Norfolk County are residential remodelers (2.3x typical) and insurance agencies (1.6x typical). Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.
Do the math
The plans are flat monthly fees, which makes the payback arithmetic simple: what one new customer is worth to you, your margin and your close rate give the customers a month a plan has to deliver.

Plans
GEO is not sold on its own: it is included in every Organic Growth plan below. Plans are billed month to month, and there is no setup fee to pay. Ask our CEO which plan fits.
FAQ
GEO is not a standalone product: it comes with every Organic Growth plan. The plans are $1,495 (Silver), $2,495 (Gold) and $3,495 (Platinum) a month, and the two higher plans include a fully managed, custom-built website. No setup fee, no contract.
It means your name, phone number and address, and other details like hours and services, read the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and everywhere else an AI engine might look. The first step in our process is an audit of exactly that, since conflicting details make it harder for engines to describe you accurately.
GEO complements SEO rather than replacing it, and both are part of Organic Growth. Technical SEO is one of the pieces of GEO, and the same data, pages and reviews that serve you in search are what AI engines draw on. You can read about the Organic Growth plans that include both.
The index looks at eleven kinds of business people ask for recommendations about. In Norfolk County, the most numerous are dentists (279), physicians offices (224) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (139), and relative to a typical county the busiest are residential remodelers (2.3x) and accounting and CPA firms (2.3x).
It helps most there. AI tools need consistent, verified data to recommend a business locally, which makes matching names, addresses, phone numbers and hours on Yelp, Google and Apple Maps important at each location. Larger firms, with 20 or more employees, hold 6.8% of the advice-led locations in Norfolk County.
They are two separate things. Advertisers can buy labeled, sponsored ads in ChatGPT through a self-serve Ads Manager, and some Free and lower-priced plan users see them. The ads do not affect the answers, and measuring them is still maturing. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) means optimizing your online presence for AI engines like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Others use the term AEO, or answer engine optimization. They answer directly instead of listing links, drawing on structured data, business listings and trusted content. GEO is the next step beyond SEO and complements it; it does not replace it.
According to the index, Norfolk County is more crowded than most counties: it scores 79.2, which is 48th out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 35th of our 400 markets. The busiest category is residential remodelers, at 2.3x a typical county. The score measures how many established competitors there are, and it cannot predict what an engine will say.
It would be dishonest to promise an AI mention, so we do not. We aim for accurate, consistent information that matches wherever an engine looks. As engines gather, validate and favor consistent information, results improve over time, though we cannot say how long that takes. Monthly testing across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews keeps you informed.
