Snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
76.6/ 100
Placed 90 among the 1,822 counties above 20,000 residents, and 63 within our own 400-market set. More established businesses per resident push the score up. How we work it out
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Every county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Bergen County scores 76.6, which is more crowded than most.
The score is only part of the picture. Bergen County is a county made up of many sizeable towns, and it is also an affluent county. The measures below show where it stands against every other county.
Percentiles compare Bergen County with all 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents: a percentile is the share of those counties with a lower value. Inputs: Census Bureau population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, SAIPE income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
Many towns, many questions: Bergen County counts 58 communities that clear 2,500 residents and 35 that clear 10,000, a larger spread than 99% of counties offer. A plumber in Hackensack and a plumber in the next town over are separate answers, so GEO for a business that serves several of them means local content and consistent details for each.
The headline is not the only thing worth reading. Median household income in Bergen County is $116,157, above 98% of counties. Bergen County has 18.1 established advice-led businesses per 10,000 residents, more than 94% of counties.
When it comes to GEO in Bergen County, think town by town: each place deserves its own local content and consistent details.
Home to 957,736 people, Bergen County is the 56th largest of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its headcount has moved +0.2% since the 2020 Census. Employers operate 31,871 locations here across all industries, roughly 33.3 for every 1,000 residents.
16% of the county, about 148,657 people, lives outside any named place, where "near me" and county-wide questions count for as much as a city name.
Where the customers are
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. Local questions usually name a town, so each of these is a separate context, and work on answer engine optimization (AEO) in Bergen County can be written for any of them.
| Place | Percent of all county residents | Residents in 2023 (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Hackensack | 5% | 45,736 |
| Fort Lee | 4% | 39,700 |
| Fair Lawn | 4% | 35,564 |
| Garfield | 3% | 32,456 |
| Englewood | 3% | 29,624 |
| Bergenfield | 3% | 28,274 |
Population figures come from Census Bureau estimates. Places here are cities, towns and census-designated places, so a city split between counties is counted only where it lies in Bergen County.
Your competition
Read each row across: Bergen County's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change is measured on all locations in the category, not just established ones. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. Method
The busiest category in Bergen County is law offices, with 175 established locations at 2.5x the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole down 9.2% since 2017. More comparable names means more weight on the details that tell them apart. The next most crowded categories are physicians offices (505 established locations, 2.5x) and real estate agents and brokers (46 established locations, 2.3x). The lightest field belongs to auto repair shops: 52 established locations, 0.6x the typical density, so an answer in that category has fewer names to weigh.
The fastest growth is in residential remodelers: locations of every size rose 12.1% since 2017, to 536, so new names keep appearing. The one category moving backward is physicians offices, down 16.3% to 1,122 locations. Physicians offices account for the most large employers, with 115 locations at 20 or more employees.
Remember what a count can and cannot say. It tells you how many established businesses are in each category. It says nothing about AI mentions, search volume or timing, and nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer.
Demand signal
The permits shown are authorizations for new housing units. Source: Census Bureau Building Permits Survey, annual county files, with a same-months comparison for this year. Permits mark intent to build, not finished construction.
Year after year, approvals in Bergen County land close together (4,023 in 2021, 3,803 in 2025), which works out to 39.7 per 10,000 residents and sits above 64% of counties. The 2026 year-to-date count is 2,403 units to 2,360 last year, +1.8%.
Among businesses tied to building, real estate agents and brokers (2.3x typical) and residential remodelers (1.6x typical) are the most crowded in Bergen County. Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.

Plans
There is no separate price for GEO, since each of the three Organic Growth plans below includes it. There is no setup fee and no contract on any plan. Talk to our CEO about the options.
Questions we hear
Pricing is flat and monthly, and GEO comes inside the Organic Growth plans instead of being priced on its own: $1,495 for Silver, $2,495 for Gold and $3,495 for Platinum. If you only want local landing pages, RankGuarantee™ is $495 a month alone and comes with every plan. Cancel anytime: there is no contract and no setup fee.
Reviews feed into it. Engines read review volume and sentiment, which is why reviews and reputation are part of what we do, plus LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ schema. No mention can be guaranteed, though a healthy, current set of reviews gives engines more to work with.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Reports cover AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
The ones you serve. Bergen County has 58 places of 2,500 or more residents, led by Hackensack, Fort Lee, Fair Lawn, Garfield and Englewood. The GEO content is hyper-local, and RankGuarantee™ landing pages (the monthly volume depends on whether you choose Silver, Gold or Platinum) create a page for each service in each place you cover.
By our count, Bergen County is more crowded than most counties: it scores 76.6, which is 90th out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 63rd of our 400 markets. The busiest category is law offices, at 2.5x a typical county. The score measures how many established competitors there are, and it cannot predict what an engine will say.
We do not promise AI mentions, because nobody controls them. We aim for accurate, consistent information that matches wherever an engine looks. As engines gather, validate and favor consistent information, results improve over time, though we cannot say how long that takes. You see monthly test results from Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: preparing your online presence for AI engines such as Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Others use the term AEO, or answer engine optimization. They answer directly instead of listing links, drawing on structured data, business listings and trusted content. It is described as the next evolution of SEO and complements it rather than replacing it.
It means your name, phone number and address, and other details like hours and services, read the same on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and everywhere else an AI engine might look. That is what the audit at the start of our process checks, since conflicting details make it harder for an engine to describe you correctly.
No. GEO works on the unpaid side: helping engines find accurate information about your business. ChatGPT ads are a separate paid test: sponsored, labeled ads shown to some users on the Free and lower-priced plans, bought through a self-serve Ads Manager and targeted by country and context, not by keyword. Measurement is still maturing, and ads do not change the answers.
