Market snapshot
AI Answer Competition Index
72.5/ 100
Ranked 169 among the 1,822 counties of at least 20,000 people, and 111 within our own 400-market set. A higher score means more established businesses are sharing the same pool of AI answers. The method behind the score
The AI Answer Competition Index covers eleven kinds of business that people ask an assistant to recommend: law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical and auto repair. For each county of 20,000 or more residents it counts established locations, those with five or more employees, per 10,000 people. Manhattan scores 72.5, which is more crowded than most.
Manhattan has two traits worth noting: it is a borough where the headcount is flat or falling, and it is a borough with many established recommendation-category businesses for its size. Each measure below places it among all counties.
Each percentile places Manhattan among the 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more residents, as the share of them with a lower value. Drawn from: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes AI visibility here
A shrinking population (-5.7% since the 2020 Census, 1,597,451 residents) means Manhattan cannot count on newcomers to refill the customer base. Staying visible and accurate wherever people ask, including AI assistants, is how an established business holds on to its share.
Two other features of the Manhattan market matter here. Manhattan has 24 established advice-led businesses per 10,000 residents, more than 99% of counties. 9.2% of the advice-led locations in Manhattan have 20 or more employees, more than in 97% of counties.
When it comes to GEO services for Manhattan businesses, with the population falling, the goal is to hold your share of the households that remain.
Manhattan is dense, and questions are frequently about a neighborhood or about what is nearby as much as about the city. GEO here comes down to precise service-area data, consistent listings and content for the specific services you offer.
New construction
The permits shown are authorizations for new housing units. Source: Census Bureau Building Permits Survey, annual county files, with a same-months comparison for this year. Approved units may not be built yet.
From a high of 4,467 units in 2024, approvals in Manhattan dropped to 2,984 in 2025, about 33% less, and the 2025 rate of 18.7 per 10,000 residents is below 65% of counties. Year to date (January through August), approvals stand at 1,388, compared with 1,260 a year ago, a change of +10.2%.
Among businesses tied to building, real estate agents and brokers (8.5x typical) and residential remodelers (1.9x typical) are the most crowded in Manhattan. Rising permits bring people who need a roofer or an electrician and have no one to ask, and falling permits shift questions toward repair and replacement. Either way, accurate local information is what GEO works on.
The field an answer chooses from
Read each row across: Manhattan's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. Method
The busiest category in Manhattan is law offices, with 1,215 established locations at 10.5x the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole down 8% since 2017. More comparable names means more weight on the details that tell them apart. The next most crowded categories are real estate agents and brokers (281 established locations, 8.5x) and accounting and CPA firms (218 established locations, 2.6x). The lightest field belongs to auto repair shops: 21 established locations, 0.1x the typical density, so an answer in that category has fewer names to weigh.
Accounting and CPA firms shrank instead, losing 18.6% of their locations to land at 544. The biggest employers sit in law offices, where 445 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how often people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.
Comparable counties
Of the 400 markets we cover, these six sit nearest Manhattan on size, income, index score, firm size, growth and established share. Use them as context when you weigh AI search in Manhattan.
| Look-alike | Score (0 to 100) | Population (2023) | Growth since the 2020 Census | Advice-led location change since 2017 | Share with 20+ staff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manhattan, NY (you are here) | 72.5 | 1,597,451 | -5.7% | -9.6% | 9.2% |
| Multnomah County, OR | 75.0 | 789,698 | -3.2% | -6.7% | 7.5% |
| Montgomery County, MD | 72.1 | 1,058,474 | -0.3% | -1.8% | 6.3% |
| Fairfax County, VA | 65.3 | 1,141,878 | -0.7% | +2.9% | 7.1% |
| Middlesex County, MA | 75.9 | 1,623,952 | -0.5% | -1.4% | 7.1% |
| Norfolk County, MA | 79.2 | 727,473 | +0.2% | -0.6% | 6.8% |
| San Francisco County, CA | 67.5 | 808,988 | -7.4% | -3.7% | 8.3% |
These six markets, out of 400, match this one most closely on size, income, score, firm size, growth and established share. Data sources are the same as above.
Closest of the six is Multnomah County, OR, at 75.0 on the index against 72.5 for Manhattan. Fairfax County, VA is the most different of the six, at 65.3. The mix of firm sizes differs too: 6.3% of Montgomery County, MD's advice-led locations have 20 or more employees, against 9.2% here. A similar score means a comparable number of established competitors, not a comparable result.
Check the math
GEO is part of the monthly Organic Growth plans, so the useful question is how many new customers a plan has to bring in to cover its cost. Customers from AI answers, search and Google Maps all count, and nobody can promise any of them.
What is in the work
Markup engines can read
Schema markup goes onto your most important pages: FAQ, LocalBusiness and Review, so your business is described in a format machines handle well.
NAP across every listing
Your address, name and phone number are made to match across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look.
Written for the questions people ask
Hyper-local content answers real customer questions in plain, conversational language, focused on Manhattan and its neighboring areas.
Volume and sentiment
Engines look at how many reviews you have and how customers feel about you; we help you collect and respond to them consistently.
The groundwork
A clean technical base lets search engines and AI engines read your pages without trouble.
AI visibility reporting
Visibility is tested monthly in Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT, with reports on knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
None of this stands alone: it is part of Organic Growth, with local SEO and Google Maps work beside it and a managed website on Gold and Platinum. If you need customers while this builds, our paid ads team manages Google, Bing and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) campaigns.
How it works
We compare your business name, phone number and address and your site information across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look, so everything matches.
We add schema markup on your most important pages: LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema and Review schema, so AI engines can read your details as structured facts.
We produce plain-language, hyper-local content that speaks to what your customers actually ask about your services and the places you serve.
Each month we test your visibility across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT, then adapt the work to what we find. Reporting includes knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
Monthly plans
You do not buy GEO separately, because it is included in all three Organic Growth plans below. Every plan is month to month, with no setup fee and no contract. Book a call with our CEO to compare plans.
FAQ
The fee is flat and billed monthly, and GEO is part of the Organic Growth plans rather than as a separate line item: $1,495 for Silver, $2,495 for Gold and $3,495 for Platinum. If you only want local landing pages, RankGuarantee™ is $495 a month alone and comes with every plan. Cancel anytime: there is no contract and no setup fee.
No, they are separate. Some ChatGPT users on the Free and lower-priced plans now see labeled, sponsored ads that advertisers buy in a self-serve Ads Manager, with targeting by country and context. Measurement is still maturing, and the ads do not influence the answers. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
You get schema markup (Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ), matching listings across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and others, conversational content written for local questions, reviews and reputation work, technical SEO, and monitoring across Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Reporting covers AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.
Reviews are one of the inputs. Engines read how many reviews a business has and how positive they are, so our GEO work includes reputation management, Review schema and consistent business details.
According to the index, Manhattan is more crowded than most counties: it scores 72.5, which is 169th out of 1,822 counties of 20,000 or more people and 111th of our 400 markets. The busiest category is law offices, at 10.5x a typical county. A score is a headcount of established competitors, not a forecast of what any engine will do.
These names mostly mean the same thing: generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization and AI search optimization all describe getting your business ready for engines that give direct answers, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. They draw on structured data, listings and trusted content, so the work complements SEO instead of replacing it.
No, and we do not promise one. No one controls what an AI engine says. GEO makes the information those engines can find about your business accurate, consistent and well structured, and results improve over time as engines gather, validate and favor consistent information. We give no timeframe, but we test your visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity every month and show you what is changing.
It works, and several locations raise the stakes, because AI tools need consistent, verified information to recommend a service locally. We begin by auditing every address so it is described identically wherever engines look. Larger employers account for 9.2% of Manhattan's advice-led locations.
It means your name, address, phone number and details like hours and services are identical on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and every other source an engine might read. Our process starts with an audit of precisely that, since conflicting details make it harder for engines to describe you accurately.
