The market in numbers
AI Answer Competition Index
64.5/ 100
Currently ranked 373 among the 1,822 counties of at least 20,000 people, and 234 within our own 400-market set. A higher number means a more crowded field of established competitors. See how it is calculated
The AI Answer Competition Index covers eleven kinds of business that people ask an assistant to recommend: law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical and auto repair. For each county of 20,000 or more residents it counts established locations, those with five or more employees, per 10,000 people. Cook County scores 64.5, which is near the middle of the pack.
Cook County has two traits worth noting: it is a county where the headcount is flat or falling, and it is a county made up of many sizeable towns. The measures below show where it stands against each other county.
A percentile here is the share of the 1,822 ranked counties (20,000 or more residents) that fall below Cook County's figure. Inputs: Census population estimates, the 2017 and 2022 County Business Patterns, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes AI visibility here
A shrinking population (-3.6% since the 2020 Census, 5,087,072 residents) means Cook County cannot count on newcomers to refill the customer base. Staying visible and accurate wherever people ask, including AI assistants, is how an established business holds on to its share.
Two other features of the Cook County market matter here. Cook County has 113 communities above 2,500 residents, 79 of them above 10,000, more than 99% of counties. Only 28.9% of the advice-led locations in Cook County have five or more employees, a lower share than in 86% of counties.
When it comes to GEO services for Cook County businesses, a shrinking market makes every customer count, and being described correctly is part of keeping them.
Chicago holds about 52% of Cook County's residents, so it matters most, but the rest of the county (Cicero, Schaumburg and Evanston) asks about its own town names, and each one is a separate local answer.
Demand signal
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Data: Building Permits Survey, county annual files, and a like-for-like year-to-date comparison. Permits mark intent to build, not finished construction.
Permits peaked at 8,325 units in 2022 and came in at 5,308 in 2025, roughly 36% lower. Even so, 2025 equals 10.4 units for every 10,000 residents, which is below 80% of counties. Through the first eight months of 2026, 3,204 units were approved against 3,884 in the same months of 2025 (-17.5%).
Among businesses tied to building, real estate agents and brokers (2.4x typical) and insurance agencies (1.2x typical) are the most crowded in Cook County. Rising permits bring people who need a roofer or an electrician and have no one to ask, and falling permits shift questions toward repair and replacement. Either way, accurate local information is what GEO works on.
Your competition
The eleven rows are the recommendation categories. Each shows established locations in Cook County and sets them against the median county, so 2.0x would mean twice the typical number per resident.
Bars give each category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county among those ranked; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Source: Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which says nothing about AI behavior or search volume. See the method
The busiest category in Cook County is law offices, with 1,153 established locations at 3.1x the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole down 6.8% since 2017. More comparable names means more weight on the details that tell them apart. The next busiest categories are real estate agents and brokers (257 established locations, 2.4x) and dentists (1,369 established locations, 1.3x). The lightest field belongs to electrical contractors: 324 established locations, 0.7x the typical density, so an answer in that category has fewer names to weigh.
The fastest growth is in real estate agents and brokers: locations of every size rose 14.8% since 2017, to 2,478, so new names keep appearing. Physicians offices shrank instead, losing 15% of their locations to land at 2,849. The biggest employers sit in physicians offices, where 393 locations have 20 or more employees.
Remember what a count can and cannot say. It tells you how many established businesses are in each category. It says nothing about AI mentions, search volume or timing, and nobody can promise a mention in an AI answer.

Closest of the six is Los Angeles County, CA, at 65.1 on the index against 64.5 for Cook County. Broward County, FL is the most different of the six, at 73.2. The mix of firm sizes differs too: 4.2% of Los Angeles County, CA's advice-led locations have 20 or more employees, against 6.2% here. A similar score means a comparable number of established competitors, not a comparable result.
Communities
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. Local questions usually name a town, so each of these is a separate context, and work on answer engine optimization (AEO) in Cook County can be written for any of them.
| Community | Percent of all county residents | People (2023 estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago (part) | 52% | 2,664,452 |
| Cicero | 2% | 81,004 |

Step by step
We check your name, address and phone details and your site details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other listings AI engines read, so they all agree.
We put schema markup on the pages that matter most: LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ schema, so your business is described in a format machines read well.
We publish local content in a conversational tone that responds to the questions customers put to assistants about your services and the places you serve.
Each month we measure your visibility across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, then adapt the work to what we find. Reporting includes AI visibility, citations, platform traffic, knowledge panels and local rankings.

GEO sits next to our other work: local SEO, Google Maps optimization and, on the Gold and Platinum plans, a fully managed website. Paid campaigns on Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Bing and Google are available separately for faster leads.
Run your own figures
GEO is part of the monthly Organic Growth plans, so the useful question is how many new customers a plan has to bring in to cover its cost. Customers from AI answers, search and Google Maps all count, and nobody can promise any of them.
What it costs
The three Organic Growth plans below each include GEO, and it cannot be bought alone. You can start with no setup fee and leave whenever you like. Talk it through with our CEO.
Questions we hear
Pricing is flat and monthly, and GEO is part of the Organic Growth plans rather than as a separate line item: $1,495 for Silver, $2,495 for Gold and $3,495 for Platinum. If you only want local landing pages, RankGuarantee™ is $495 a month alone and comes with each plan. Cancel anytime: there is no contract and no setup fee.
Engines set the pace, so we give no timeframe. The work follows a set order: audit, schema, content, and each month after that we check Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT and change course where needed. Crowding in law offices across Cook County is a reason for care, not a forecast.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: preparing your online presence for AI engines such as Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Others use the term AEO, or answer engine optimization. They answer directly instead of listing links, drawing on structured data, business listings and trusted content. GEO is the next step beyond SEO and complements it; it does not replace it.
About average. Cook County scores 64.5 on our AI Answer Competition Index, sitting at 373rd among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 234th within our 400-market set. Law offices lead the field for crowding, at 3.1 times the typical county. The index counts established businesses, not AI behavior.
They are two separate things. Advertisers can buy labeled, sponsored ads in ChatGPT through a self-serve Ads Manager, and some Free and lower-priced plan users see them. The ads do not affect the answers, and measuring them is still maturing. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.
You do not have to. It begins with the audit, moves to schema on key pages and then to local content. A new site is an option, not a requirement: Gold and Platinum come with a custom-built, fully managed website if you want one.
The work covers structured data on your key pages (Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema), consistent business details across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and more, conversational hyper-local content, review and reputation work, technical SEO, and ongoing monitoring across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Reports cover citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
We do not promise AI mentions, because nobody controls them. We aim for accurate, consistent information that matches wherever an engine looks. As engines gather, validate and favor consistent information, results improve over time, though we cannot say how long that takes. You see monthly test results from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
It is especially useful for several locations. AI tools need consistent, verified data to recommend a business locally, so a name, address, phone number and set of hours that match across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the rest matter at every location. Larger firms, with 20 or more employees, hold 6.2% of the advice-led locations in Cook County.
