The market in numbers
AI Answer Competition Index
54.0/ 100
Currently ranked 674 among the 1,822 counties above 20,000 residents, and 335 within our own 400-market set. More established businesses per resident push the score up. How we work it out
We built this index around eleven categories where someone is likely to ask an assistant who to call (law, dental, medical, real estate, insurance, accounting, remodeling, plumbing and HVAC, roofing, electrical, auto repair). Each county of 20,000 or more residents gets a 0 to 100 score for how many established locations, with five or more employees, share its population. Queens scores 54.0, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Beyond the score, Queens is a borough where the headcount is flat or falling and a borough where advice-led businesses are mostly tiny, with fewer than five employees. Each measure below places it among all counties.
A percentile here is the share of the 1,822 ranked counties (20,000 or more residents) that fall below Queens's figure. Built from: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns for 2017 and 2022, income estimates from the Census Bureau and the Building Permits Survey.
What stands out
A shrinking population (-6.4% since the 2020 Census, 2,252,196 residents) means Queens cannot count on newcomers to refill the customer base. Staying visible and accurate wherever people ask, including AI assistants, is how an established business holds on to its share.
Two other features of the Queens market matter here. Only 30.1% of the advice-led locations in Queens have five or more employees, a lower share than in 81% of counties. Median household income in Queens is $81,399, above 80% of counties.
When it comes to GEO services for Queens businesses, a shrinking market makes every customer count, and being described correctly is part of keeping them.
With 2,252,196 residents in one borough, competition in Queens is decided neighborhood by neighborhood. Accurate listings, reviews and neighborhood-aware content carry more weight than one citywide page.
Demand signal
Bars show new housing units approved by building permits. Source: Census Bureau Building Permits Survey, annual county files, with a same-months comparison for this year. An approval is not a completed home.
Permits peaked at 7,931 units in 2023 and came in at 3,395 in 2025, roughly 57% lower. Even so, 2025 equals 15.1 units for every 10,000 residents, which is below 71% of counties. Year to date (January through August), approvals stand at 5,125, compared with 1,791 a year ago, a change of +186.2%.
Among businesses tied to building, residential remodelers (2.7x typical) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (1.3x typical) are the most crowded in Queens. Permits show where new customers are coming from; GEO does not wait for them to arrive, and content for new homeowners is easier to publish before demand peaks.
Who shares the answer
Read each row across: Queens's established locations in a category, the crowding bar against the median county (the dark tick is 1.0x), the change in all locations since 2017, and the count of large employers.
Each bar shows a category's established locations (five or more employees) per 10,000 residents as a multiple of the middle county we rank; the dark tick is 1.0x. Change covers every employer location in the category, of any size. Counts come from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022) and are no measure of AI mentions or search volume. See the method
The busiest category in Queens is residential remodelers, with 332 established locations at 2.7x the density of a typical county, with the category as a whole up 23.6% since 2017. More comparable names means more weight on the details that tell them apart. The next most crowded categories are physicians offices (694 established locations, 1.4x) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (398 established locations, 1.3x). The lightest field belongs to roofing contractors: 14 established locations, 0.4x the typical density, so an answer in that category has fewer names to weigh.
Growth is highest in that same category: 23.6% more locations of any size since 2017. Physicians offices shrank instead, losing 12.1% of their locations to land at 1,410. The biggest employers sit in plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, where 111 locations have 20 or more employees.
These figures describe the competition, not AI behavior. No public data tells us how often people ask an assistant for a recommendation or how an engine picks among businesses, and we do not guess; the table shows how many established rivals share the answer space.
Look-alike markets
Of the 400 markets we cover, these six sit nearest Queens on size, income, index score, firm size, growth and established share. Use them as context when you weigh AI search in Queens.

| Brooklyn, NY | 45.0 | 2,561,225 | -6.4% | -0.2% | 4.4% |
| Staten Island, NY | 56.5 | 490,687 | -1% | +1.3% | 5.3% |

| DeKalb County, GA | 56.0 | 762,992 | -0.2% | +6.7% | 4.7% |
These six markets, out of 400, match this one most closely on size, income, score, firm size, growth and established share. Same sources as above.
Closest of the six is Brooklyn, NY, at 45.0 on the index against 54.0 for Queens. Pima County, AZ is the most different of the six, at 65.8. The mix of firm sizes differs too: 6.4% of Pima County, AZ's advice-led locations have 20 or more employees, against 4.9% here. A similar score means a comparable number of established competitors, not a comparable result.

The process
We review your business name, address and phone number and your site information across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and the other places AI engines look, so everything matches.
We implement schema markup on your most important pages: Review, LocalBusiness and FAQ markup, so engines can read who you are, where you work and what you offer.
We write local content in a conversational tone that answers the questions people ask about your services and the places you serve.
Each month we test your visibility across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT, then adapt the work to what we find. You see citations, AI visibility, knowledge panels, platform traffic and local rankings.
What it costs
GEO comes inside the Organic Growth plans, not as a separate purchase. You can start with no setup fee and leave whenever you like. Talk to our CEO about the options.
Run your own numbers
Whether GEO pays off for you depends on your own figures, not a market average. Enter what a customer is worth and the plan you are weighing to see how many new customers a month cover it.
Questions
Pricing is flat and monthly, and GEO comes inside the Organic Growth plans instead of being priced on its own: $1,495 for Silver, $2,495 for Gold and $3,495 for Platinum. If you only want local landing pages, RankGuarantee™ is $495 a month alone and comes with every plan. Plans are month to month with no setup fee.
No. We do not promise a mention, and no one honestly can. No one controls what an AI engine says. GEO makes the information those engines can find about your business accurate, consistent and well structured, and results improve over time as engines gather, validate and favor consistent information. We give no timeframe, but we test your visibility in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity every month and show you what is changing.
You can cancel anytime; there is no contract or setup fee. Pricing is flat and month to month, and we take only one business per category per city.
They are part of the picture. Review volume and sentiment are both scanned by AI engines, which is why reviews and reputation work sit alongside schema markup (including Review schema) and consistent business details in our plans.
You get schema markup (LocalBusiness, Review and FAQ), matching listings across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and others, conversational content written for local questions, reviews and reputation work, technical SEO, and monitoring across Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Reporting covers knowledge panels, citations, AI visibility, platform traffic and local rankings.
It can. We write the hyper-local content around the services you offer and the areas you serve, and in a dense borough like Queens that means neighborhoods and nearby areas, supported by RankGuarantee™ landing pages and consistent business data.
These names mostly mean the same thing: generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization and AI search optimization all describe preparing your business for engines that answer directly, such as Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. They draw on structured data, listings and trusted content, so the work complements SEO instead of replacing it.
About average. Queens registers 54.0 on our AI Answer Competition Index, placing 674th among the 1,822 counties we rank, and 335th within our 400-market set. Residential remodelers are where the field is most crowded, at 2.7 times the typical county. The index counts businesses and says nothing about AI behavior.
They are two separate things. Some ChatGPT users on the Free and lower-priced plans now see labeled, sponsored ads that advertisers buy in a self-serve Ads Manager, with targeting by country and context. The ads do not affect the answers, and measuring them is still maturing. GEO is the unpaid work behind accurate answers about your business.

How it was made
All of the numbers here are drawn from public Census Bureau data; one formula covers every county, so Queens is judged by the same yardstick as anywhere else. We use no client data and publish no AI mention counts, traffic or rankings: the index is a count of businesses and nothing more.
